Wachsmann, Konrad, The Turning Point of Building, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, 1961, p. 204
Ths chapter of Wachsmann´s book on innovation in design, production and construction deals with pedagogical methods in relation to teamwork. He first employed these team methods in education in 1951 in the Institiute of Design in Chicago. In his model, a development team consists of a number of groups of three members each. The smaller groups work through an interplay between search for information, laboratory experiments, continuous development in model and drawing and an internal discussion within the group. Over time, each groups would work on a sub-problem of the overall project outline, choosing themselves a starting point among a number of categories. The complete timeline of development is divided into a number of parts equal to the number of groups, after each session a common critique is held, then the material from the first group sis handed over to the second and so on. After the complete cycle, all groups will have worked on all aspects of the project. The process plan is also coupled to a spatial plan, which outlines the spatial organization of the collaborative process.
As I am reading the texts by Wachsmann, I find his ideas quite contemporary in many ways. His somewhat technocratic approach as indicated above, are mirrored by a strong interest in innovation. He also covers issues of industrialization and material research, and as I read in on these parts I become more and more convinced in the relevance of his ideas in the contemporary situation.
